Sensys Gatso USA Announces the Fulfillment and Finish of the Oklahoma Uninsured Vehicle Enforcement Diversion (UVED) Contract

22-08-2020

After nearly two years of providing a fully managed, automated number plate recognition (ANPR) program to identify uninsured vehicles on Oklahoma roads, Sensys Gatso USA and the Oklahoma District Attorneys Council (DAC) are mutually parting ways with regard to this effort.

“Some key factors required for the success of this first-in-the-nation, data-driven program were just not there”, says Andrew Noble, President of Sensys Gatso USA. “Typically, automated enforcement programs have consequences when a citizen ignores a request. In Oklahoma, the burden of proof of insurance is on the vehicle owner and lack thereof is then taken up by the State for prosecution. This prosecution step was not implemented, making the overall payment rate for the program well below what is standard. Without payment compliance, the program is not economically feasible".

Over the past two years the results have been strong on this program. Sensys Gatso has identified approximately 22,000 vehicle owners that, according to the state’s insurance databases, were not insured. Sensys Gatso remains the only company that has operated a fully-automated, statewide Uninsured Vehicle Enforcement program successfully.

Looking ahead, Sensys Gatso will continue working with the states that adopt robust payment compliance measures to ensure long-term success in this market. Uninsured vehicle compliance continues to be a top priority for the company and collaboration with additional states is underway. As legislation continues to be passed allowing for these programs and states understand that an enforcement program is only as good as its enforcement, Sensys Gatso will do its part in keeping uninsured vehicles off of America’s roads.
