Due to the potential severity of crashes in tunnels, the complexity of the emergency rescue, the clearance operations and follow-up risks of fire and smoke there is a need for a reliable in-tunnel speed enforcement system. Speed enforcement in tunnels has traditionally been very difficult because the conditions are harsh, space is tight and access for regular cleaning is limited. This is a problem since speed compliance is arguably more important in tunnels than anywhere else on the road network.

We have developed a dedicated speed enforcement system designed for tunnels which is housed in a special mechanical enclosure to cope with the space limitations and the demanding environment. It does not use expensive (and prone to failure) automatic mechanical cleaning systems. Instead, it is utilizing an innovative cone in front of the camera that creates a pillar of air that helps keep it clean.
